Charles R. Drew Transition Center
Project Search
Project Search is a School to Work Transition program for special-needs adults in partnership with Jewish Vocational Services (JVS), Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) and the Detroit Public Schools. It prepares students for the World of Work through a four-part process with the ultimate goal of job placement or post-secondary training.
Part 1:Employment Readiness/Classroom Training
During the first phase, students discover their interests, skills, needs and values while exploring career options.
Other topics covered include:
-
Social and soft skills training
-
Self advocacy and empowerment skills training
-
Team building
-
Job seeking and employability skills training
-
Budgeting and money management
-
The Americans with Disabilities Acts
Part 2: Job Shadowing
Based on their interests, students visit a variety of job sites in small groups for further career exploration. The goal is for students to better understand what particular careers entail and to encourage students to begin visualizing themselves joining the workforce and doing various jobs.
Part 3: Summer Internship
Students work at a job site four hours a day, Monday through Friday, over a four-week period. Students are paid a minimum wage and are accompanied by a JVS job coach, who assists them in learning their job responsibilities.
Part 4: Job Placement
At the end of the internship, graduating seniors receive job placement assistance during meetings with transition specialists in one-on-one and group settings. Meetings focus on job seeking skills and job placement.
Supportive Services (Optional):
Community-Based Assessment (CBA)
Students who need help identifying realistic vocational goals get hands-on work experience with the supervision of a JVS job coach. Students perform real job tasks (at a minimum wage) to determine what type of work best suits them. Most CBAs are completed in two weeks, but duration varies, based on individual needs.
